Heartwood Laurent, 48, is a pipe carver at Chacom. He was trained by his elders. In the space of a few sec- onds, his precise gestures produce the basic shape of a pipe. Sizing, roughing out, planing, milling, grinding, boring, polishing—it takes about 100 steps to create the final object. The Saint- Claude pipe-making tradition dates back to 1856, when a Corsican offered to supply Daniel David with burl, the upper part of briar root, which was far superior to the boxwood that had been used up until then. These pipes really caught fire: between the wars, there were as many as 1,000 manufacturers. Chacom makes 40,000 pipes a year, 60% of which are exported.
