A place to write A century ago, on Félicité Island, a hun- gry bat was drawn to a bunch of drupes. Enclosed in magenta red fiber, the fruit concealed, in its stony center, the seed of an Indian almond tree. Upside down, sus- pended from the branch of a mango, the bat took a bite of the drupe and swallowed the kernel. The seed passed through its intestines and, a few hours later, fell 50 meters in a fine streak of white excrement onto a tuft of grass. Water and light gave birth to a small green shoot. Fragile yet tenacious, it grew, heroically resisting heat and floods. It put down delicate roots and was covered in a thick bark like a turtle’s skin. Leathery, slightly undulating foliage with ocher and yellow stamens spread into a thousand branches. The highest branches turned a dark, glossy green, flecked with orange. The seed from the drupe became a majestic, strong Indian almond tree 25 meters high, as impressive as a pagoda. And one hundred years later, a hotel was built around it.
