WHERE WE WOULD NOT EXPECT THEM Among the French consumers of probiotics, 12% say they buy probiotics to maintain their bone health. Such drivers are still fragile but should be reinforced as efforts are made in the field of sci- ence by some of the players in the sector. Probi (Symrise Group), the Swedish probiotic expert, has proven the efficacy of its Probi® Osteo active ingredient consisting of three strains (L. paraca- sei DSM 13434, L. plantarumDSM 15312 and L. plantarum 15313) on preventing the loss of bone mineral density in the spine. This placebo-con- trolled study published in 2019 was conducted7 in 249 healthy early postmenopausal women for one year. Building on these findings, the com- pany has recently entered a research agreement with the University of Melbourne (La Trobe) to continue its clinical investigations in Australia on its probiotic blend and on bone health and osteoporosis. Probiotics have come a long way since their concomitant use when taking antibiotics. But everything is still to be done: while two out of five French people are consumers, probiotics are still poorly associated with hwealth benefits in general (3/5) as compared to vitamins, plants... An image that remains linked and limited to in- testinal problems. Lumina Intelligence has re- cently added “weight management” as a new category to its analyses, proof that the diversifi- cation of the health axes in terms of products is real. In addition, 75% of the French population would like to see the term “probiotics” labelled on the packaging of food supplements (Harris International for Synadiet, February 2021). More visibility, science, of course, and more concrete actions thanks to consumer feedback on prod- ucts: these are the key drivers that may well take probiotics to new lands, and most likely to future success stories.• References: 1Psychobiotics: A Novel Class of Psychotropic.
