Behind the scenes in Prati Located on the west bank of the Tiber, Prati (“meadows” in Italian) is a formerly rural area that was urbanized in the late 19th century with a rigorous grid of broad streets. This affluent shopping district and a bastion of the Roman Bar has been spared the tourist hordes and remains a conservative Roman stronghold. There are numerous movie theaters here, as well as the bookshop Profondo Rosso opened by Dario Argento and the apart- ment-museum of writer Alberto Moravia. There’s also a large pink villa, formerly the property of the family of Marcello Mastroianni, that’s bursting at the seams with the film, theater and opera costume workshops founded in 1964 by Umberto Tirelli. A close friend of Luchino Visconti, Mauro Bolognini and Franco Zeffirelli, and a member of the Roman jet set, Tirelli died in 1990. Ever since, Dino Trappetti has been at the helm of the company, which made the costumes for Game of Thrones as well as for the production of the opera Macbeth directed by Mario Martone. Located beyond the reception spaces and offices, a veritable wunderkammer of memories, drawings, paintings and dedications, the workshops are the nerve center of the place, where an army of highly skilled artisans (photo), whose dexterity is mesmerizing, beaver away. You cannot buy anything here, but the tour (by appointment) will leave an indelible memory. TIRELLI COSTUMI Via Pompeo Magno, 11B. Tél. +39 06 321 1201. www.tirellicostumi.com 122
