New art on the Janiculum Hill The Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill) is a district of winding streets linking Trastevere and the Vatican that is dominated by a park that offers one of the most beautiful walks in Rome. It is home to many cultural institutions and foreign art academies. The American Academy in Rome, founded in 1911, is housed in a large neo-Renaissance villa together with the Villa Aurelia, which was built in 1650 for Cardinal Girolamo Farnese. The Academy has been a shining presence on the cultural scene, particularly since the arrival of the charismatic Peter Benson Miller, who devises the programs, organizes exhibitions, attracts leading curators and gallerists, and promotes the young Fellows in residence. Winners of the Rome Prize, these artists, architects, designers, restorers, curators, writers and musicians are for the most part American. Visitors can see the artists’ studios and talk to residents on weekends and late afternoons, by appointment. AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME Via Angelo Masina, 5.
