5. Retaking the Esquilino Perched on the hill of the same name, the Esquilino is quintessentially Roman in its atypical character. Very bourgeois in the past, it now has a colorful, multi-ethnic, working-class vibe, while its Umbertian architecture rests on its splendid laurels. The vast Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, recently restored to its original design, is the district’s heart. The park has a fountain adorned with an octopus, a newt and other marine creatures—hence its nickname, the “Fritto Misto.” As for the magnificent architectural ensemble forming the square, perched on its 280 columns and porticoes, it was built between 1882 and 1887 by Gaetano Koch, architect of the majestic Piazza della Repubblica, and is unique in Rome. Most of the shops, restau- rants and department stores closed a long time ago, but the Gatsby Cafè is heralding a trendy revival. Located in a former millinery whose original decor, including hats, has been playfully preserved, the address is run by a quintet of creative young Romans and frequented by a tribe of young urbanites working in the film industry and other cultural and creative sectors. The bar is a magnet for emerging talents, local regulars and familiar faces. When you leave, cross the square and look up: one of the two houses perched like lookouts high above the roofs belongs to director Paolo Sorrentino. The grande bellezza up in the sky.
