volunteers (converted into the Fundación Hospital de la Illa del Rei) proudly attended the first exhibition organised by the Hau-ser & Wirth art cen-tre, which formed an alliance with them to transform the ruins into a place for con-temporary creation that has won a Euro-pean Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award. The project by Hau-ser & Wirth, created by architects Luis Laplace and Miguel Sintes, has become a powerful driving force for Menorca and its capital, Maó. Indeed, the Balearic Island has been crowned ‘Best Art Destination’ in the Wallpaper Design Awards 2022. ‘In 2016, Iwan and Manuela Wirth [its owners] visited the Illa del Rei and were fascinated by the com-munity restoration project and the idea of giving a second life to the 18th-century rooms’, explains Mar Rescalvo, director at Hauser & Wirth. Here you can see sculptures in the middle of nature by Camille Henrot, Martin Creed and Eduardo Chillida, and temporary displays (such as the one by Rashid Johnson, which can be visited at the moment) coexist with activities that involve Menorcan artists. Furthermore, both local residents and foreigners often catch the boat that goes to the islet, not only to find out about the program-me, but to try the Mediterranean cuisine served in its restaurant, Can Albertí, un hotel con mucha historia y amor al arte. // Can Albertí, a hotel with a long history and love of art.
