With barely 50,000 inhabitants, the Dutch municipality of Weert, located practically on the border with Belgium, has just opened one of the most amazing museums in the world. The new Museum W, which houses over 17,000 works of religious art and regional history, has turned into a magic box that also acts as an exterior display case. ‘We conceived one of the façades to resemble a gold-cladded reliquary, in which the relics of the holy are kept’, explains designer Maurice Mentjens, in charge of the project that has been executed on the premises of the old town hall, built in 1982. The original features of the golden façade are the screens that project video installations created by artists, as well as information about the exhibitions inside the new art centre. However, Mentjens explains the reflection behind the project, ‘Museums are the holy places of our present-day secularised society’. museumw.nl ENG
