TITLE TEXT HERE 33 King William Street 33 King William St was a 10 storey reinforced concrete building with 3 basements located on King William St at the North side of London Bridge. The site had sensitive surroundings with it bounded by the Bank Station upgrade works taking place immediately adjacent to the boundary. The site was circular in layout, with a perimeter length of 250 metres. The building was situated adjacent to Prudential’s European office, and the heavy footfall of London Bridge, therefore careful pedestrian and traffic movement had to be managed during peak hours and in tandem with the surrounding businesses operations. The works consisted of asbestos removal, soft strip, demolition and service removals from the plant room above the 10th floor to the sub-basement levels. As a result of the successful demolition of the structure, Erith was also awarded the enabling works package to facilitate the erection of the structure itself. This included groundworks, piling, the erection of three tower cranes and the erection of a gantry on King William St. The demolition was carried out using the top-down method where 13-tonne machines were lifted to the highest point by crane. The building was then systematically taken down using top down demolition techniques. The demolition arising’s were deposited down the existing lift core and removed at the bottom by a larger excavator where it loaded 8 wheel tippers for removal of the arisings to a local recycling plant/crusher. Rebar was cut into manageable pieces and removed from the roof in tested metal skips, utilising the tower crane. Beams and columns were lifted in situ by the tower crane and processed by the larger machines on the ground floor using a pulveriser attachment minimising noise and speeding up the demolition. Our demolition manager, assisted by our lifting supervisor, assessed any loads for their weight and size. All hot works were carried out in accordance with Erith’s hot-work permit system.
