TITLE TEXT HERE Fielden House Erith was contracted to undertake the role of Principal Contractor for the basement construction works at Fielden House, Shard Place. This project consisted of a bulk dig and excavation, piling installation, temporary works and asbestos in soil removal. These works involved the installation of a new 1 storey basement using the hybrid concept of top-down and bottom-up. This project made way for the installation of a new superstructure for the building. This top-down and bottom-up approach was decided upon after detailed hazard risk analysis and early contractual engagement with stakeholders. Erith’s senior management agreed with the client that this bespoke approach would allow for an accelerated bulk dig and enhanced final stage of the bottom-up construction programme, against a total top-down construction. The sequence of works for this project was as follows: Owing to the site’s location, clear liaison and interfaces had been established to ensure an unaffected programme. To this end, Erith produced a bespoke methodology concerning the party wall works around the LUL vent shaft. It ensured that our works would not affect access for the stakeholder and agreed with the hazard mitigation methods, such as scaffold protection, that were incorporated to protect their assets. • Set-up of welfare • Reduced dig alongside top-down stages • Installation of plunge and bearing piles • Temporary building supply • Break down of guide wall • Pile probing • Installation of piling mat • Capping beam construction • Installation of temporary works and shoring support • Site clearance • Complete top-down and bulk excavation to basement formation level • Cropping down piles • Installation of pile caps • Installation of drainage and service ducts • Slab construction • Columns starters and walls installation • Bottom-up conventional construction, until the casting of ground floor slab • Removal of asbestos in soil Basement Demolition and Reconstruction Location: London Bridge Street, London SE1
