Since 1996, Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque Enfants du Monde has been helping children with heart defects from underprivileged countries get surgery in France when they cannot in their countries due to a lack of technical or financial resources. More than 4,000 children have been cared for by host families in nine French towns since the charity was founded in 1996. The Air France Foundation contributes to Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque by donating plane tickets to transport the children and their caregivers. Zain, age 5, and Yazan, age 3, two Syrian brothers suffering from cyanogenic congenital heart disease, were able to get surgery. They arrived in May 2022 aboard flight AF 529. Thanks to the Foundation’s support, Zain and Yazan were successfully operated in France. Since the surgery, they have resumed a normal life and returned to school in Syria. They provide their host families with regular updates. SCROLL Humanitarian Surgeons from Doctors of the World The Air France Foundation supports Doctors of the World in its humanitarian surgery missions in Africa and Asia. For over 30 years, Doctors of the World has been developing a humanitarian surgery programme called Opération Sou-rire. The NGO organises missions in Africa and Asia to treat communities far from health centres, train local staff, provi-de medical equipment and promote the physical and social reintegration of patients. The Air France Foundation supported Doctors of the World with a donation corresponding to 36 vouchers (plane tickets) on Air France’s international network. In 2022, Doctors of the World was able to carry out 10 reconstructive surgery missions in four countries (Cambodia, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Tanzania). They provided surgical and psychosocial care for 522 patients, the majority of whom were children under 5 suffering from congenital pathologies, malformations or acquired anomalies. Opération Sourire supported 175 healthcare professionals through theoretical and practical training during operations. SCROLL Supporting Pediatricians of the World For several years, the Air France Foundation has supported the humanitarian work of Pediatricians of the World by providing plane tickets for its missions abroad. The NGO Pediatricians of the World, founded in 1996, now has a network of 300 members and volunteers working on several continents to provide medical and surgical support to improve the health of underprivileged children and their families. It sends teams of pediatricians and general practitioners, obstetricians, pediatric nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, psychomotor therapists and dentists to underprivileged countries (Benin, Cambodia, Chad, Guinea, Haiti, Laos, Morocco, Moldavia, Togo, etc.). These regular assignments last from 1 to 3 weeks with multidisciplinary teams of three to six healthcare professionals. The Air France Foundation has been supporting Pediatricians of the World for several years. In 2022, we contributed to their humanitarian work through an in-kind donation corresponding to a maximum of 40 vouchers (plane tickets) on Air France’s international network.
