HOW IT WORKS VERSATILE, TRANSVERSAL AND SCALABLE is dedicated to this two-fold mission, which is, in fact, just one. Following a pilot scheme in a selection of Spanish cities it will be rolled out to all projects in that division through 2023. It will later be extended to the rest of the company’s businesses, which will adapt their technology and management model to it. Housed in the Operations Control Center (CECOA, on the ACCIONA Campus, Madrid), it integrates advanced big data anal-ysis technologies to monitor operations, their level of emissions and their causes in real time. “It allows us to instantly calculate the carbon footprint of our activity and, based on that knowl-edge, design the most efficient measures to minimize it, such as improving driving, optimizing routes and frequencies, avoid-ing downtime and vehicle substitution,” explains Javier López Buciega, director of Citizen business. “For example, we can com-pare the emissions on the same route between different drivers of refuse collection trucks, which have a big impact on emissions, because of their size”. There are many control centers, but this one is groundbreak-ing due to its integrated and proactive approach to fleet monitor-ing. “It is a comprehensive remote-control system tracking all emissions as well as a management system to improve operational efficiency,” he added. “It offers us daily insight into the impact in a totally automated way by cross-referencing the parameterized data of routes, consumption, emissions and the accounting data from the fuel cards.” ADVANCED DATA ANALYSIS To distill all this strategic information, the Center integrates the monitoring equipment and systems into each of the services, including the maintenance and repair divisions. Control technol-ogies receive data on the behavior of the fleets on site from a vari-ety of sensors, ranging from exhaust gas analyzers to flow meters, on-board diagnostics (OBD) and telematic systems that monitor consumption and driving patterns in order to quickly detect inci-dents or deviations. Its architecture is completed with computer brains and soft-ware specialized in collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing this enormous volume of vehicle-to-vehicle data remotely. This continuous flow of information also allows reports to be generated regularly that provide an all-round view of the performance and any change over time. In addition to the technological leverage, López Buciega high-lights the differentiating factor of the workforce and how it is coordinated in many areas such as Sustainability, Innovation, ICT, Digital Transformation, Purchasing and Contracts. Each profes-sional responsible for monitoring receives specific training in the operation of monitoring equipment, data analysis, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective measures. For this complex anatomy to function smoothly, “we have established cybersecure communication and collaboration chan-nels both with those responsible for service management and with those in charge of fleets and maintenance,” said the director, while mentioning a new differentiating factor: the personal and professional proactivity of the drivers. In addition to raising awareness about the need to decarbon-ize, the company runs a bonus scheme that rewards employees for meeting emissions, consumption, and project-related breakdown targets. IT IS A REMOTE EMISSIONS TRACKING SYSTEM, AS WELL AS A MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO IMPROVE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY VERSATILE, TRANSVERSAL AND SCALABLE It is possible to monitor garbage collection, street cleaning and environmental contracts, as well as all types of vehicles, especially non-electric powered vehicles: from large garbage trucks to sweepers, washing equipment or trucks with crane attachments and hook-lifts, which vary from 1.5 to 32 tons of maximum authorized mass, although the Center is also monitoring inspection and light vehicles until the entire fleet is completed. Its management model and proprietary technologies and developments have been designed to be scalable to all Urban and Environmental Services activities. And thereafter, to any of the company’s activities, through the optimum utilization of both individual and aggregated information. The integration of the latest technologies such as machine learning will facilitate the smooth advancement of this strategy.
