OUR / CLAIMS / offering A Case Study SECONDEE PROGRAMME CASE STUDY INVESTING IN OUR FUTUREs W/R/B Underwriting’s team works with many external partners in a long established programme developed to improve practices, knowledge, and expertise. One example of this is their legal secondment programme in the Claims Team. As part of the commitment to providing efficient, accurate, and timely responses to every client, W/R/B Underwriting ensures its Claims team always has the right tools, knowledge, and expertise to drive the right decision-making for clients and the wider business. Over the years, W/R/B Underwriting has partnered with a number of leading law firms which has not only supported the development of its own team but significantly helped improve the understanding legal partners of the market, claims, and the processes that take place. As a result, W/R/B Underwriting’s team can all positively contribute to the business. Something for everyone The programme allows secondees to gain a deeper insight into W/R/B Underwriting’s clients’ needs, to see this from the front line, and observe how W/R/B Underwriting operates. The programme delivers first class insight into current and future client requirements and offers an opportunity for secondees to develop their skills and become a more rounded insurance lawyer. The 6-month programme is open to a select number of legal partners whose secondees have at least 3 years’ post qualification experience, so they are suitably equipped both in terms of technical expertise, experience and talent to be the best fit for the dynamic and growing claims team. Although W/R/B Underwriting already has qualified solicitors in its current claims team, the collaborative nature of the secondee programme enhances everyone’s legal knowledge. This allows W/R/B Underwriting to provide our insurers, brokers and other stakeholders, with a better service, build great relationships with the legal firms with the partner, and enables them to develop bespoke legal services to best suit the needs of W/R/B Underwriting and their clients. Through the eyes of their secondees The main takeaways from the course are not only in the skills acquired, but the shared expertise and the ability to join an inclusive and welcoming team. One current participant said, “Even in a short amount of time, it’s clear to see that the principal asset of W/R/B Underwriting has to be its people.” “There is a high level of expertise within the Claims department, which fosters a culture of ownership and accountability for your day-to-day work, whilst still providing plenty of support, or the benefit of others’ experience, where needed. It’s very impressive.” Being part of this team gives secondees first-hand insight into the evolving needs of a growing market. Another secondee reflected of his time with W/R/B Underwriting during the recent global crisis. “[A] key takeaway has undoubtedly been W/R/B Underwriting’s impressive response to one of the largest and most challenging global events in living memory (the COVID-19 crisis). In view of the unprecedented nature of events, I was initially unsure as to how a business with so many moving parts would respond. What I saw was the team come together with a universally positive attitude, adapt extremely quickly, and focus tirelessly on successfully helping its clients with the challenges they were facing.” A commitment to everyone’s future W/R/B Underwriting’s Head of Specialty Casualty Claims, Daniel Cambage, sums it up, “In order to enhance the technical legal skills and build a long-lasting relationship with legal providers, you need a programme like this. It is undoubtedly a benefit to W/R/B Underwriting, but also those on the programme, who gain a deeper insight into the practices, and how to best service coverholders, brokers and intermediaries as a whole.”
