<page method="xml-texts" num="13"><![CDATA[How do science and technology impact our world? Science and technology are everywhere. Everything in our world has been impacted by science and technology and everything once began as just an idea. Now, there are innovations that we can’t imagine our lives without. We depend on new technology e very day and are in constant search of a better alternative. Science and technology are irreplaceable and intricately intertwined with everything we do, touch, and interact with in our lives. That’s why we emphasize connecting the sciences together in all of our programs. IE School of Science and Technology pushes students to go deeper into other subjects such as chemistry and physics. Students not only gain essential knowledge and training in their individual programs but also learn what else is out there—what’s on the horizon and how it is going to impact us. Discovery is a part of IE School of Science and Technology’s DNA. Our programs combine computing and data science with anything from finance, to cognitive science, energy and healthcare to ensure our students have a unique and in-demand mindset for a front-row seat to success. At IE School of Science and Technology, we’re working towards developing a new tech hub in Europe that will raise the bar for science and technology. At the intersection of business leadership and technological thinking, our students can not only solve tough problems, but also solve the right ones in an evolving world. IE School of Science and Technology leading innovation You can’t learn to innovate without knowing what’s needed. We don’t look at the sciences as disconnected areas of focus—traditional STEM education doesn’t prepare students sufficiently for the real world. Instead, we believe in bringing the sciences together to unlock more possibilities and ways of thinking. This broader vision of science and technology encourages interdisciplinary connections to be made across subjects to enhance students’ understanding of how the world works and open their minds to possibilities. These connections spark a curiosity—a curiosity that leads to innovation. IE University students have a natural instinct for filling in the gaps with new and better solutions. They find problems and craft their own solutions, and a key part of this is being skilled in leadership, decision-making and influence. Programs at IE University prime students to create their own success and become leaders to a better tomorrow. Whether they’re bachelor’s, master’s or executive master’s students, they’re on the frontline of what it means to be cutting- edge in our ever-expanding globalized world. Being an IE University student and being business-minded go hand-in-hand. Many IE University graduates go on to found their own startups or kick start careers in roles that didn’t exist ten years ago. With a network of emerging industry leaders, expert faculty and hands-on labs to test out ideas in real time, opportunities in technology are just around the corner at IE School of Science and Technology. Making an impact starts with science and technology. Let’s see where they can take us. A conversation with Ikhlaq Sidhu]]></page>

<page method="xml-texts" num="33"><![CDATA[The students met during groupwork exercises and were inspired to act during one of IE University’s renowned Tech Venture Bootcamps, when they spotted a real need in the solar energy sector. They realized that an important element of solar energy project management was still being carried out with outdated or limited tools, even on large-scale projects. Determined to solve this problem, they launched Sunship, and they’ve already pitched it to real investors in our Venture Lab accelerator. Tell us a little about yourselves and why you chose IE University. dk : I was born in Sweden but grew up in Monaco. Growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to do, but my love of tech was already there. Around high school, I realized that the things I enjoyed as a hobby could actually be a career, and decided to study computer science. I chose IE University because I wanted something international, which you don’t really get in Sweden or Monaco. Also, the idea of learning in English, in an environment that encourages entrepreneurship, really attracted me. I wanted to be part of a place that was more than just a traditional university. ap : I’m from Milan, and I’ve enjoyed fixing things since I was a child—I thought I wanted to be an engineer. But I came to realize that the teaching methodology at the best engineering schools was all super-theoretical, and you’re one of 300 in the classroom. IE University was one of the first to offer computer science and AI, which I was interested in. And here, it’s hands-on right away. I think that’s super important for computer science—you can know all the theory in the world, but if in the end you can’t solve the problem… pra : I grew up in Cannes, southern France, but I traveled a lot with my parents, mainly in Asia: Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. I was always interested in the startup world; my dad built his own company and that was my vision of work. I never actually even thought about doing anything else other than building my company later. I decided to pursue computer science because I think, in today’s society, it’s important to be a well-rounded individual. I’m bad at coding, for example, so I really force myself to do the things I’m not good at. Tell us about your project, Sunship—what does it do? Sunship targets the early stages of solar farm development. There’s no tool designed specifically for this; currently, it still relies heavily on Excel. There’s a lot of management, a lot of people and a lot of paperwork involved, with no single tool to do everything; to find and acquire the land, secure the rights and manage the installation. So these tasks are often managed inefficiently, especially for larger developers working across different regions with varying regulations. By creating Sunship as a centralized ERP tool, we aim to simplify this process, reducing delays and improving overall efficiency. It’s particularly valuable for large solar developers juggling multiple projects in different locations. How has your IE University experience contributed to launching Sunship? First, the classes and practical experiences of the program itself. A course called Designing and Using Databases, for example, was life-changing—we learned a lot through this course that has actually helped us build Sunship. And the Machine Learning Foundations class definitely provided a better idea of where to go with a feature for the website that features AI and machine learning, too. As well as the mentoring, networking and resources available at the Venture Lab, we gained the chance to pitch to real investors by winning the Bootcamp startup competition. We got over 25 interviews with industry leaders and really came to understand the problem and think about iterating what a solution would look like. We came to understand the customer, too, and created a list of potential clients before moving on to making a real working version of the website. What would you say to aspiring entrepreneurs thinking about IE University? The international community is incredible, and there are so many opportunities to explore things beyond just academics. We’re encouraged to think about how the things we’re learning can be applied to real- world problems. We’ve learned a lot through our journey, and managed to build something essential. “They encourage us to think about how we can create something new, and they give us the tools to do it. We’ve had workshops, speakers and even competitions that are all about starting businesses or solving real-world problems”]]></page>

<page method="xml-texts" num="43"><![CDATA[Learn more about the project Learn more about the project Gregorio, Rodrigo and Vera were driven by a shared desire to make the tech affordable and accessible. That’s why they created Botzo using as many open- source hardware and software solutions as they could. The team leveraged Arduino processors for real-time processing in a 2-Degree-of-Freedom (2- DoF) system. Gait planning and inverse kinematics for realistic movement, as well as 3-D printing to produce hardware, came together in a remote- controllable result. The project was conceived and developed with the support of the IE Robotics & AI Lab. For the student team, it proved an ideal opportunity to put the theoretical knowledge they’d gained in the program into practice. A lot of trial and error—and plenty of effective collaboration between the students’ different specialties—brought the digital canine to life. “Working on Botzo has been a journey of discovery. We’ve grown in our understanding of robotics, from the nuts and bolts of hardware to the intricacies of inverse kinematics and ROS,” said team member Gregorio Orlando. And they’re just getting started: the three are already looking to integrate Reinforcement Learning into a new, even more advanced version of the robot. <page method="xml-texts" num="77"><![CDATA[My name is Miranda Drummond. I’ve always been fascinated by solving complex problems. This interest guided my choice to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and AI at IE University. Over the past four years, I have deepened my expertise in algorithm optimization, system design and AI, continually aligning my studies with the broader implications of technology on global development. Recently, thanks to IE university’s exchange program, I was able to complete a semester abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Here, I have travelled, immersed myself in the local culture and made an array of like-minded friends. Additionally, I was able to immerse myself in research. Through one of my professors here, I have been able to work as a research intern essentially focusing on making Wi-Fi really fast! I will now be using this research in my Bachelor’s Thesis work. This international experience has not only enriched my technical skills but also expanded my perspective, allowing me to view technology’s role in society through a more global lens. Why did you take the initiative to go abroad? I was inspired to go abroad to broaden my educational and cultural perspectives. Having already lived in multiple countries and pursued a diverse academic path, studying abroad in Hong Kong seemed like a natural step. It provided me an opportunity to immerse myself in a dynamic, engineering focused environment, which is crucial for my studies in computer science and allowed me to pursue interests in electrical engineering and business. How did IE University help you in the process of going abroad for an exchange? IE University has been incredibly supportive in my decision to study abroad. The university facilitated the exchange by providing a streamlined application process, detailed pre-departure orientations, and continuous support for academic and logistical queries. Additionally, my advisor at IE helped me select courses that would complement my existing curriculum and align with my career aspirations. What do you miss the most about IE University while abroad? While I am enjoying my time in Hong Kong, I definitely miss the close-knit community at IE University. The collaborative environment and the daily interactions with my peers and professors, who are deeply passionate about innovation and technology, are something I look forward to returning to. Moreover, the campus life and the multitude of activities and clubs that IE offers are unique and something that I cherish deeply. What are the biggest advantages of studying abroad? Studying abroad offers immense benefits, including exposure to new academic challenges and teaching styles, which refine one’s adaptability and problem-solving skills. It also broadens one’s cultural understanding and global perspective, essential in today’s interconnected world. Personally, it has allowed me to connect with adiverse group of students and professionals, expanding my professional network and exposing me to novel ideas and technologies. <page method="xml-texts" num="91"><![CDATA[Discover our student’s research internship experience at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, where she contributed to frontline research in neuroscience and biotechnology, applying advanced computational tools to study the genetic basis of stress-related behavior. What was your research about? I took part in the Amgen Scholars Program, an undergraduate summer research program in science and biotechnology. I was admitted to LMU Munich and worked in the affiliated institution of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry. My project focused on optimizing a pipeline for home-cage recordings of mice, and then applying it to recordings of genetically modified mouse. The goal was to understand the role of a specific gene in stress-related behavior. How do you see your research connecting to real-world impact in biotech or neuroscience? Although my project was basic research, it has important implications. Certain genetic variants of the gene we studied are associated with a higher risk of psychiatric disorders in humans. This gene is also a drug target, and some research groups are currently developing drugs aimed at its protein product, early results in animal models are very promising. In addition, our lab is working to understand why some individuals are more resilient to stress than others, which could help develop new therapeutic strategies. What did you enjoy most about your research internship? What did you learn? I really enjoyed learning about the experimental process and working in a highly multidisciplinary environment. It gave me the opportunity to deepen my understanding of neuroscience and biology, while also applying my computational background. Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them? The biology part was particularly challenging for me, but my supervisor was always supportive and encouraged me to ask questions. Another challenge was related to training our pose estimation model, a type of computer vision model that identifies and tracks the position of an animal’s body parts across video frames. This model, based on a convolutional neural network, had to be very reliable, but in the beginning it didn’t adapt well to all the different behaviors we wanted to study. To solve this, I had to go back and preprocess the videos, adding more data to retrain the model several times until we achieved the best possible performance. Which courses, technical tools, professors, or projects at IE most contributed to your success in your research role? During the internship, I mainly worked with convolutional neural networks, which I first learned about in Professor Luciano Dyballa’s course, and with machine learning pipelines, which I studied in Professor Matteo Turilli’s Foundations of Machine Learning course. As for soft skills, communication was key. Since I was the only fully computational researcher in the lab, I often had to explain technical problems to people from very different backgrounds. This improved my ability to adapt my explanations to different audiences. How was your experience presenting your research at the Amgen Scholars European Symposium? We spent three days in Cambridge for the Amgen Scholars European Symposium. There, I presented my poster to fellow scholars from institutions across Europe, as well as Amgen employees and program coordinators. They had the chance to ask questions about my project, and I was honored to receive the second-best poster award from my institution, thanks to both the design and the way I presented it. Are there any outcomes or opportunities you expect to come from this presentation? What’s next for you after this internship? At the symposium, 50 European scholars presented their work, selected from more than 2,000 applicants. Meeting and connecting with such diverse and talented peers was already a valuable outcome. We also attended talks on “Lives in Science,” where Cambridge researchers and alumni shared their career paths and offered us the chance to discuss our own aspirations. As for my next steps, I’m looking forward to doing another research internship next summer, ideally in more theoretical machine learning. Until summer I will continue to work at CyPhy Life [research group at IE University’s Robotics & AI Lab].]]></page>

<page method="xml-texts" num="93"><![CDATA[Could you explain what you worked on during your Final Project and how that work has evolved into what you do now at Telespazio/ESA? What real-world impact do you expect your project to have? My Final Project focused on developing a Large Language Model powered Interface designed to emulate the XMM Newton Helpdesk, a man powered Q&A service offered by ESA where astronomers can send in questions, errors, and general inquiries concerning their work with XMM Newton related data. The idea was to take 20 years worth of Tickets in which experts had answered user questions and fine-tune a language model to act as a XMM Chabot. Other aspects of the project included building a customized Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system, designed to grab relevant information concerning a question from XMM related documentation. The process of building focused heavily on the exploration of various methods, including the fine- tuning of embedding models, hybrid retrieval systems, rerankers, text chunking strategies, metadata filtering, query- document routing and many more. My work at ESA now has continued to focus on the XMM Chatbot, evolving from a static question-answer system to a fully-fledged autonomous agent which can directly perform astronomical data processing tasks for users. The technical details of this exactly are slightly too complex to cover in a document as this. In terms of real world impact I think there are 2 main ideas. Firstly, the system does intend to serve real astronomers by aiding them in their research process, and is currently live to a limited user group within the ESA office in Madrid. Secondly the project aims to serve as a foundation/ exploration of LLM agents for Astronomy, attempting to explore what works, what doesn’t, what best practices may be, and how we can create these systems at scale for missions outside of XMM. What was your first visit to the ESA site in Madrid (ESAC) like while you were working on your Final Project for the Bachelor in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence? It was lovely. Of course I was sort of enamored with the idea of going to an ESA office, the name alone carries a lot of weight. It felt exciting to go visit the frontier of Astronomy. The office generally also lies in a scenic and beautiful location. I was also excited to meet my supervisor, Aitor Ibarra, in person, and meet the team behind XMM Newton. They were all very welcoming and interested in what I was working on, the whole atmosphere in the office is rather inviting. How would you describe your collaboration with the team—scientists, engineers, and data specialists? In one word, Vital. While I have the ML/ AI knowledge to undertake a project like this, I had not had any experience with Astronomy. Specifically Astronomical Data Analysis Software. So developing a project focused on that would be almost impossible without the native knowledge of the XMM team, specifically my supervisors who have been nothing short of spectacular in their help within the project. They bring in ideas on features, they can tell me exactly what APIs are available for implementation, they can give me advice on how to structure something so that the end user gets what they want. As its intended to be a user facing project having expert users by my side to advise me was extremely important and valuable. Additionally collaboration between departments is also valuable, the data science team has been a big help in setting up the hardware powering the system. And generally there are far more people that have contributed to the project in some way, big or small, than they realise. Was there any specific challenge that was particularly hard to solve? How did you overcome it? Ah, not exactly I would say. Some things have been harder than others, but most everything was solvable with some elbow grease. Including the Real Helpdesk tickets is a challenge which has yet to be solved, as there is currently no way to do so without heavy manual labor in data cleaning, which has been decided is not the best use of time. What have you learned from working on this project and collaborating with the ESA and Telespazio teams? I can tell you about all the technical things I learnt, setting up LLM Agents, Figuring out RAG Chunking strategies, Model Fine-tuning, the list could go on forever. But to be quite honest the biggest takeaway I have had so far is an improvement in my ability to simplify technical concepts. My supervisors at ESA, while experienced in software, are not Machine Learning experts, and everything I did I had to explain to them in plain English, in understandable ways. While this is considerably easier to do so to a software engineer than the average person, I think I’ve gotten a lot better at this, and this has really helped me shine in conferences and presentations. At ADASS 2025 I had 12 minutes to present the entire project including a demo to a panel of astronomers/software engineers that were almost completely unfamiliar with the inner workings of LLMs. I think it went over really well and people seemed to really be able to grasp what the project consists of, and a great part of that comes from what I described above. How was your experience presenting your work at conferences like ADASS and AstroORDAS? How did the scientific community react to your work? It was lovely. I’ve always enjoyed presenting and I was quite excited to show off the project to the greater community. They reacted very positively for the most part, the questions they asked after my oral presentations were exactly the kind of questions I was hoping for. It seemed to instill a sense of curiosity. One of the questions asked was whether I saw a future in projects such as this being expanded to multiple missions, or perhaps even ESA wide chatbots, which has always been the idea I have had in the back of my head. Do you feel your project opens new possibilities for integrating AI into space science workflows? I would hope so. A lot of AI Agents in Space Science seem to be focused on solving a problem, i.e. using LLMs for some classification problem or for a specific bottleneck in some workflow. The project here is slightly different in the sense that it is built to be a general use agent, not directly focusing on a single problem, but rather attempting to be a generally useful tool for Space Science, making researchers lives a little easier. I hope that we can repeat this sort of project for other missions, based on the infrastructure that we have set up thus far. With the new agreement signed between ESA and IE University, what kinds of opportunities do you envision for current and future students? I am not exactly sure what the agreement entails, however I would hope that this would mean there is an influx of the younger generation moving toward ESA. While IE does not offer a Physics or Astronomy focused program (I think?), a lot of software engineers work at ESAC in Madrid, and I think we could always use some more. Especially with the rise of AI these days I would expect a growing number of opportunities to present themselves for IE students wanting to work with ESA. Now, I can only speak from the perspective of the ESAC in Madrid, but other standpoints across Europe likely have slightly different opportunities for students such as Robotics or R&D. How would you like to continue growing within the space sector? Ideally I would like to expand this project into a multi mission idea, but for that I would likely need a team of people working on it. I suppose that could mean growing into a more technical lead–type role. That said, I don’t have any fixed ambitions at the moment. What advice would you give to an IE student who hopes to work on real- world, high-impact projects? Say yes to opportunities that present themselves. Your life at IE is filled with opportunities to work on real-world projects. Participate in Datathons, ask your professor whether they have anything you could work on with them, Check whether Final Projects proposals are offered from respectable companies. Just say yes.]]></page>
