Painting the town The local collective Yataal Art—meaning “expanding art” in Wolof—has transformed the appearance of the Damel neighborhood. At the instigation of the energetic Mod Boy, known as Patin, artists from all over the world have been coming to create frescoes on the dilapidated walls of homes, using collage, painting, ceramic and other techniques. It’s all a far cry from graffiti hastily sprayed with an aerosol can. People are delighted to offer their houses, and compete with each other to display the finest facade. This astonishing outdoor street art museum is open to everyone, and it’s free. There are no opening times and its geographical boundaries are constantly shifting. In Plateau, another site, still little known, is also bursting with treasures: the OH Gallery. Open only by appointment, it’s a boon for all enthusiasts and collectors of works from the new Dakar scene.
